SUMMARY:Hike/short walk/BBQ
DESCRIPTION:We are offering two different-paced walks followed by a BBQ at the home of KLS members in Reigate.  There will be a choice of routes: seasoned walkers can join Hilary and Clive for a medium length hike of 6 to 7 miles (meet at 10.50 am for 11 am start).  Or for a gentler pace join the short walk meet at 12.45 pm.  We will rendezvous at 2pm back in Reigate so any non-walkers can join us there for a repeat of last year’s delicious BBQ – please bring a salad or dessert to share.  There will be a charge of £2/head to cover the cost of the BBQ food. \nWe need to know numbers  for BBQ catering and any vegetarian or other dietary requirements so please RSVP by Wednesday\, 20th July.

SUMMARY:Picnic in the Park
DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for a picnic and games in Marble Hill Park in Twickenham and enjoy an afternoon with old friends and getting to know new members. If you are new or relatively new to KLS this is a great opportunity to meet other members!  We will meet on the side of the park that backs onto Orleans Road (TW1 3BL). There is an entrance gate on Orleans Road with the Coach House Cafe ahead and towards the left; we usually meet on the green area towards the right before the cafe.  Bring along a picnic\, games\, rugs and anything else you can think of!  Parking is available on Orleans Road but on a fine day it can get busy so it may be necessary to use the car-park or to park on other residential roads nearby. There is also a café selling drinks and refreshments just a few minutes away from where we’ll meet.  If you feel adventurous you can park at Ham House\, on the other side of the river and there is a little ferry-boat that goes across from Ham House to Marble Hill Park. Just come off the boat\, turn left and right and the gate to the park is there. That car park can get busy too on a sunny day.

SUMMARY:Holocaust Memorial Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Yom Hashoah is when Israel and Jewish communities remember the victims of the Holocaust.  On May 1st\, the closest Sunday to Yom Hashoah this year\, we will be running a special workshop for the young people in 3 local Jewish communities\, in school years 8 to 10.  This will provide the opportunity for the young people and their parents to hear a survivor’s story\, participate in a question and answer session\, watch a short film and take part in a related group activity which focuses on creating a better world for the future. \nThe format of the morning will be very similar to that of the workshops we have run for the past ten years for local Kingston and Elmbridge schools (the very successful joint project of the two Kingston synagogues) and will be held at Kingston Liberal Synagogue.   We have long thought that our own synagogue students were missing out on these workshops\, and we hope you will take advantage of this opportunity.  To assist in the organisation of the morning we would appreciate your attendance confirmation by Thursday\, April 14th.

The Nazi persecution alone led to the death of some six million Jews. \nThe initiative is supported by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust who have set the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day in 2016: Don’t stand by. \nThe Royal Borough of Kingston’s Holocaust Memorial Day will be held on Sunday 31 January 2016 in Kingston Guildhall. It is being organised by the Kingston Inter Faith Forum in conjunction with Kingston University. \n  \nThe event is open to all. No booking is required. It will be followed by refreshments.

DESCRIPTION:We will meet at KLS at 10am and go by car returning at about 4pm.  The museum covers quite a large area but there is a café if anyone does not want to visit the whole site.   Peter Watling\, who gave us the talk in May\, will be our guide. \nThere is also “The Concorde experience”.  You go on board a decommissioned plane and have a “virtual flight”.  This needs to be booked in advance so we need to know numbers. \nMuseum entry is £9.00 for seniors plus £5.00 for Concorde. \nPlease let Nick Osorio or the KLS Office know if you are interested in this outing and whether you could offer to drive.  We already have several drivers available so getting there should be no problem.  Some of you may live nearer the museum than KLS so we could meet some people there.   When we know who is coming we can sort out drivers and passengers.

Remember to bring a picnic lunch and plenty of soft drinks.    Will the Chair be a dab hand at rounders\, or will he revert to his rugby training and tackle the Rabbi? \nLast year someone asked why we didn’t have this event in the park over the road from the Synagogue.  And we couldn’t think why!  Getting here is easier (for most)\, parking is easier\, we have toilets in the Synagogue\, we can make hot drinks if it’s a bit chilly\, we can have ice pops from the freezer\, and if\, horror of horrors\, it rains and rains\, we can play indoor rounders in the hall.  It’s a no-brainer\, so this year we will be in The Park Over The Road. \nIs she batting or catching?

DESCRIPTION:Cricket will be one of the more normal games we play unlike wellie wanging!\nFrom 1-2.30pm (straight after we have cleared up the Kiddush) \nTo mark the end of another exciting year we will be having another party in the park over the road.  Bring a rug or chairs\, a picnic and something yummy to share!  We will be playing games (hurling the mangold was a huge hit\, literally) – bring your games too.  And you don’t have to be a Beiteinu pupil to join in – all members are welcome.  If it is hot there will be ice pops!  If the weather is not up to park life\, we will stay in the NFJ Hall for indoor fun.

DESCRIPTION:After our chavurah supper\, we have a talk and discussion with a guest from Israel\, Reut Michaeli.  Reut is in the UK as the guest of the New Israel Fund\, and will be speaking at the LJ Day of Celebration on Sunday 7 June.  Reut is the Director of the Hotline for Refugees and Migrants. ‘Hotline’ aims to defend and further the rights of refugees and migrants in Israel and works to prevent human trafficking. Its activities include running an advice centre (mainly staffed by volunteers)\, legal activism and public education activities.  The Hotline for Refugees and Migrants is a non-governmental and non-profit organization that aims to defend and further the rights of refugees\, migrants and prevent human trafficking in Israel\, and is a grantee of the New Israel Fund.  Prior to working at Hotline\, Reut was an Associate Director at IRAC – the Israel Religious Action Centre of the Israeli Movement for Progressive Judaism. \nWe will have our usual informal chavurah supper with the service and meal starting at 6.30pm\, and afterwards\, at 8pm\, Reut will talk about the situation facing the approximately 55\,000 refugees and asylum seekers in Israel\, mainly from Eritrea and Sudan. She will discuss current plans to imprison or deport the refugees from practical\, legal and Jewish values standpoints. \nGuests are welcome to services @ KLS\, but please contact the office beforehand.

SUMMARY:Shavuot Seder @ SLLS
DESCRIPTION:Come join your SLLS friends in an old Shavuot tradition. In the context of a seder\, using our Haggadah Shel Shavuot\, we will use Tanach and Rabbinic Literature to deepen our understanding of the history and teachings of Shavuot. We will share some ritual foods such as a cheese mountain and some Torah shaped biscuits. On Shavuot we read from Ezekiel\, “Mortal\, eat what is offered you; eat this scroll\, and go speak to the house of Israel.”  So I opened my mouth\, and he gave me this scroll to eat\, as he said to me\, “Mortal\, fill your stomach and your belly with this scroll that I give you.”  I ate it\, and it tasted as sweet as honey to me. (Ezekiel 3:1-3).  The seder will be led by Rabbi Janet Darley. \nThe seder will include a supper\, so bring something to share—and of course we’ll have cheesecake. Please Please contact the SLLS office if you plan to come\, so that they know how big the cheese mountain needs to be!
