SUMMARY:Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration
DESCRIPTION:What is Holocaust Memorial Day?\nEach year\, communities across Britain come together to remember the millions of people killed in the Holocaust\, Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia\, Rwanda\, Bosnia\, Darfur and other parts of the world. The Nazi persecution alone led to the death of some six million Jews. \nThe initiative is supported by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust who have set the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day in 2015:Keeping the Memory Alive. \nThe Royal Borough of Kingston’s Holocaust Memorial Day will be held on Sunday 1 February 2015 at 2.30pm in Kingston Guildhall. It is being organised by the Kingston Inter Faith Forum in conjunction with Kingston University. \nThe event will be opened by Rev Andrew Williams (Kingston University Chaplain)\, and Rabbi Charley Baginsky (Kingston Liberal Synagogue) will introduce the afternoon on the theme: Keeping the Memory Alive.  There will also be words from Josh Whatsize (Kingston University Student and National Lead for Youth Ambassadors\, Holocaust Memorial Day Trust) looking at keeping the memory alive in future generations.  Rabbi Samuel Landau (Kingston\, Surbiton and District Synagogue) will introduce the act of commemoration\, and light the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust candle which is then passed around. \nA choir of children from both Kingston Synagogues will sing\, and children from the synagogues will read an adapted Kel Maleh Rachamim prayer of mourning.  Leaders from different faiths will read\, \nThe event is open to all. No booking is required. It will be followed by refreshments. \nTo help keep the memory of the Holocaust alive\, young people living or studying in the Kingston area were invited to submit a piece of art to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. \nSelected art works will be displayed from 2pm at the Holocaust Memorial Day event\, and the Mayor of Kingston will award prizes to the winners during the event.  The exhibition will then be mounted in public places\, education centres and faith-based organisations across the Borough. \n  \n\n– See more at: http://hmd.org.uk/events/kingston-upon-thames-hmd-event#sthash.C8Jc1W6q.dpuf

SUMMARY:A Rabbi and a Priest re-read the story of Adam and Eve
DESCRIPTION:We can promise you a thought-provoking and entertaining evening when a Rabbi and a Priest together re-read the story of Adam and Eve at the next meeting of CCJ Staines. \nThe event is part of Inter Faith Week. The Revd Patrick Morrow is an Anglican priest and a national programme manager for CCJ. Rabbi Debbie Young-Somers is the Community Educator for the Movement for Reform Judaism. \nChristians may not realise how differently to Christianity Judaism interprets the story of Adam and Eve. So the question our guest priest and rabbi are posting for the audience is: “Adam and Eve – falling up or falling down?” “In our society the story of Adam and Eve has had a huge impact. Christians\, and not only the most devout\, think of it as about ‘the Fall’\, which brought sin and death into the world\, and gave rise to the need for a heavenly Saviour\,” explains Patrick. “Judaism interprets the story differently\, sometimes as one of Eve and Adam growing up\, learning good and evil. Hence the idea of ‘the Fall Upwards!’ This will be a close reading by a rabbi and a priest trained in their respective traditions\, for the text holds secrets in every detail. Come and join the discussion.”\n \nEntry free but donations invited to CCJ funds. \nContact CCJ Staines and District Branch at ccjstaines@gmail.com or on 01252 622978. \n

SUMMARY:Mitzvah Day 2014
DESCRIPTION:This year KLS is expanding its Mitzvah Day projects.  Join the Beiteinu pupils and the KLS Choir at Southborough Nursing Home in Langley Avenue (Surbiton) where the residents will be entertained with music and songs. \nWe are also introducing a year-round donation station for the Kingston Food Bank.  Non-perishable food (with a future Best Before date) that can be donated to help local people who are in crisis: \nMilk(UHT or powdered)   Sugar(500g)  Fruit Juice(long life cartons)  Soup  Pasta sauces Sponge pudding(tinned) Tomatoes(tinned) Cereals Rice pudding(tinned) Tea bags/instant coffee Instant mash potato Rice/pasta Tinned meat/fish Tinned vegetables Tinned fruit Jam Biscuits or snack bars \nMitzvah Day is an international event:  Every year on Mitzvah Day an astounding 35\,000+ people say ‘yes’ to social action and giving\, spreading goodness\, repairing the broken and quite simply\, making this world a better place. \nMitzvah Day’s hundreds of social action initiatives are underpinned by our mission to reduce hardship and poverty\, care better for our environment and give a little joy.  We bring these Jewish values alive by creating opportunities and partnerships that put them to work.  It’s all about imaginative hands-on projects that play a pivotal part in building stronger communities\, creating durable links between different faiths and charities\, both Jewish and not\, and cultivating valuable relationships with other faith groups. \nMitzvah Day was founded in 2005 by Laura Marks and became a registered charity in 2008.  There are lots of ideas for Mitzvah Day at their website\, as well as getting involved with KLS’s activities.

SUMMARY:Sanctuary Sukkah
DESCRIPTION:Rabbis Charley Baginsky and Danny Rich\, together with other faith leaders and members of their communities\, will be leaving from KLS at 1.15pm on the 11th October to walk to the Bentalls Centre in Kingston-upon-Thames.  Bring your lunch to KLS if you are going from there.  Otherwise\, meet us outside the front entrance of the Bentalls Centre at 1.45pm.  Please bring some greenery and decorations for the sukkah. \nOutside Bentalls\, we will be building a sukkah – representative of all the places where we as a people have been offered sanctuary. We will petition the Council of Kingston to make attempts to house Syrian families. We will be sharing our stories of our own journeys and decorating the sukkah together.  Please join us\, all welcome – including children. \nWe live in times when we often do not know how to respond to the many difficulties present in society. There is never a more poignant time in the year than during the Chuggim for us to really think about what it means to have as part of our identity a history of slavery in Egypt\, refugee status in more recent times and now to live lives in freedom. \nCitizens UK\, a civil society alliance of 350 synagogues\, mosques\, schools\, churches and unions\, is launching a campaign for the 2015 elections to ensure that the next national government resettles 1500 UN refugees per annum in the UK. These refugees\, who are the victims of the world’s worst humanitarian crises\, would be resettled through an EU funded program. Partnering with Liberal Judaism synagogues\, they’re looking to go throughout the country to build ‘Sanctuary Succot’ and ask local councils to commit to resettling 5 families.  In the Jewish community\, we know the importance of sanctuary. Whilst many were turned away\, we remember that 70 000 Jews found sanctuary in the UK during the 1930s. \n

SUMMARY:Citizens UK Campaign Meeting - ‘Sanctuary Succot’
DESCRIPTION:We live in times when we often do not know how to respond to the many difficulties present in society. Whilst many were turned away\, we remember that 70 000 Jews found sanctuary in the UK during the 1930s. . \nOrganisers and leaders from Citizens UK will be coming to Kingston Liberal Synagogue this Shabbat morning\, 20 September\, from 10 – 11 am to discuss the campaign and look at how KLS members can get involved.  We are planing to build a Sanctuary Succot in Kingston in October. \nBISHOP\, SENIOR RABBI\, IMAM AND COMMUNITY LEADERS LAUNCH PLAN TO BRING 1500 SYRIAN REFUGEES TO BE RESETTLED IN UK\nPosted on August 21\, 2014 by Gillian Owen\n\n\nOn Saturday 25th July the Liberal Jewish Synagogue played host to the New Citizens Organising Team as they launched their plan to resettle 1500 Syrian refugees in the UK. \nA group of 55 faith and youth leaders\, including Bishop Peter Selby\, Senior Rabbi Alexandra Wright of the Liberal Jewish Synagogue\, Chief Executive of Liberal Judaism Rabbi Danny Rich\, Canon Steven Saxby of Saint Barnabas in Walthamstow and Imam Suliman Gani from the Croydon Mosque and Islamic Centre\, came together to plan an 18 month strategy leading up to the 2015 national election. The strategy involves large-scale migrant voter registration\, interfaith teams to support the resettlement of refugees in local areas\, and increasing the number of refugees settled in the UK from 750 to 1500 per year. Britain\, the sixth richest country in the world\, has resettled only 48 Syrians in 2014 – not enough people to fill a double decker bus. Jordan\, the world’s 89th richest country\, has taken 1.2 million! \nThis is not the first time Citizens UK and faith leaders have joined forces to change the experiences of migrants in this country. The 2010 Citizens UK ‘Sanctuary Pledge’ to end child detention was supported by the Church of England\, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales\, the Methodist\, Baptist and United Reformed Churches\, The Muslim Council of Britain\, the Jewish Council for Racial Equality\, the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Chief Rabbi. \nThe campaign culminated at a Citizens UK assembly of 2\,500 people just prior to the 2010 General Election\, where David Cameron\, Nick Clegg and then Prime Minister Gordon Brown pledged to end child detention. Since then 4\,000 children have escaped the trauma of detention. In January 2014 the Government announced an amendment to the Immigration Bill to prohibit in law the detention of children for immigration purposes.  This enshrines in law the progress that the government has made since 2010 in ending the practice of locking up over a thousand innocent children with their families in prison-like conditions. \nThe recent planning and strategy meeting was interspersed with a Muslim Iftar meal – hosted in the synagogue – and the Jewish celebration of Havdalah\, marking the end of Shabbat and the beginning of the working week. \nAfterwards\, Imam Suliman Gani stated: \n“I visited the Liberal Jewish Synagogue because our faiths must act together for the common good. Our communities must welcome refugees\, particularly those who have been driven from their homes.” \nRabbi Alexandra Wright said: \n“The Liberal Jewish Synagogue is honoured to have hosted the Citizens UK ‘Sanctuary Pledge’ planning day. It was uplifting to see so many different communities engaged in vital action for change and to be part of the breaking of the fast for the Muslim community.” \nRabbi Danny Rich said: \n“I pledge that Liberal Judaism’s synagogues will build temporary dwellings during the Jewish festival of ‘Succot’ and invite our Christian and Muslim brothers and sisters in to join us\, as part of our work to ask our local councils to resettle a refugee family in our neighbourhoods.” \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Lights Out! Commemorate the Centenary of the Start of the First World War
DESCRIPTION:LIGHTS OUT\nThe lamps are going out all over Europe\, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime. \nSir Edward Grey\, Foreign Secretary\, uttered these words on the eve of Britain officially entered the First World War. Exactly 100 years later we are inviting millions of individuals\, households and companies to join together in a national moment of reflection. \nWe’re encouraging everyone in the UK to turn off their lights between 10pm and 11pm on 4 August 2014 – leaving only a single light or candle for this symbolic act of reflection and hope. \n \nA limited edition Centenary candle is available from M&S stores or online for £4\, with all profit coming to The Royal British Legion. \nWe hope to light one million candles across the UK to remember each and every one of those Service men and women who gave their lives in the war to end all wars. Please join together with us to create a unique national moment for the United Kingdom and The Royal British Legion.

SUMMARY:Remembrance Ceremony marking 100 years since the start of the First World War
DESCRIPTION:The Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue at Bevis Marks\, Anglo-Jewry’s longest serving synagogue\, together with the Board of Deputies of British Jews\, the UK Jewish community’s national representative organisation\, invite you to a Jewish community Remembrance Ceremony\, marking 100 years since the start of the First World War. \nThe whole community is invited to attend the ceremony – taking place at Bevis Marks on the night of Monday August 4th – which is part of the national ‘Lights Out’ event\, in which communities up and down the UK switch off the electric lights in their congregations in order to reflect on what the First World War means to them. This national event coincides with the most sombre night of the Jewish calendar – Tisha Ba’v – on which we remember and reflect on the exiles and tragedies of the Jewish people. \nBevis Marks and the Board therefore invite you to take part in a unique and atmospheric candlelit Tisha B’av service at 8:50pm\, followed by the ‘Lights Out’ ceremony\, which will take place between 10pm and 11pm at Bevis Marks Synagogue. \nThis ceremony will include a keynote address from Rabbi Joseph Dweck\, Senior Rabbi\, Spanish and Portuguese Jews’ Congregation\, as well as extracts from diaries and war poems. There will also be a display of First World War exhibits arranged by the Jewish Military Museum. \nPlease email events@bod.org.uk to register for this event.
