SUMMARY:Bookcrashers
DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of Bookcrashers will be on 15 November.  As its name might suggest\, KLS’s book club welcomes gatecrashers who have not read the book being discussed. \nBut for those who do want to read the book\, November’s is An Officer and a Spy by Robert Harris. \nThe book is a historical fiction thriller based on the true story of Georges Picquart as he struggles to expose the truth about the doctored evidence that sent the French Jewish artillery officer Alfred Dreyfus to Devil’s Island.  It won this year’s Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction \nMore information from Sara Alston via the KLS office. \nStuck for Chanukah gifts?  Come along to Bookcrashers to get some suggestions of books that would make good Chanukah presents.

SUMMARY:Adult Education - Judaism and Politics
DESCRIPTION:The relationship between Judaism and politics is a long and complex one. If Judaism is a religion first and foremost should it have any impact on our political lives? Yet\, as Liberal Jews many of us feel compelled by the call of Prophetic Judaism which tells us the two are inseparable. This course will explore some of the textual models for a Political Judaism and then move into seeking what it means to see Liberal Judaism as a political Judaism. The following weeks will then look at those Jews who were involved in radical politics and attempt to understand whether there is something about Judaism that attracts this sort of political thinking. In the last three weeks we will explore the topic through some specific issues and questions: \nJudaism and Politics \n14th January: Biblical and Rabbinic Models of Politics \n21st January: Liberal Judaism as a Political Judaism (Rabbi Danny Rich) \n28th January: Jews involved in Radical Politics \n4th February: Does Judaism tell us we must vote? \n11th February: Israel – what does it mean to be a Jewish State? \n18th February: Judaism and the issues of Modern Society…

SUMMARY:Table Tennis Club
DESCRIPTION:All welcome to join us for a friendly game of table tennis.  We meet monthly\, usually on the second Tuesday of the month at the synagogue in the NFJ Hall.  All ages and all abilities.  The club recently received a new table in celebration of Robert Markless’s tutorship of 100 Bnei Mitzvah. \n\n\nWe have two tables and play singles as well as doubles. We usually end the evening with all around the table\, when people have to keep moving around and hitting alternatively\, losing a “life” every time they lose a point. After three lives\, a person falls out. This continues until two left and they then play a best of five points singles. It can be very hectic at times\, but good fun. \nWe took part in a national tournament in 2012 and won a trophy! \nPlease contact the Synagogue Office if you would like to join us.

SUMMARY:Film Club
DESCRIPTION:Jill and Norman Hyman are planning a new activity for KLS members\, and this is how we would like it to work. Once a month\, on a Tuesday afternoon\, we plan to see a film at the Rotunda cinema in central Kingston and members can join us if you wish. \nTuesday has been selected because ticket prices are reduced to £5.50 each regardless of age. Kingston is very well served by public transport and is therefore relatively easy to reach. \nWe will meet in the foyer by the box office about 15 minutes before the commencement of the film. You need to purchase your own ticket and can sit where you wish. After the film\, members who would like a cup of tea or coffee or light refreshment could move on to one of the Rotunda’s cafés or bars and we could then discuss the film together. \nThe film club is open to all members regardless of age. Initially\, we will be selecting the film and advising members ideally by email or KLS publications of title and times to meet. \nIf you require any further details or you have some questions please contact the Synagogue office. \nAlso please contact us to register your interest so that we can gauge the level of response. \nDetails for this month: “The Second Best Marigold Hotel”\, at the Rotunda Kingston.  Please meet in the foyer by booking office at 1pm\, film starts 1.20pm.  Please remember to buy your ticket beforehand.  The film is 2 hours long so we should be out by 3.45pm just in time for tea and discussion if you wish.
