DESCRIPTION:Cricket will be one of the more normal games we play unlike wellie wanging!\nFrom 1-2.30pm (straight after we have cleared up the Kiddush) \nTo mark the end of another exciting year we will be having another party in the park over the road.  Bring a rug or chairs\, a picnic and something yummy to share!  We will be playing games (hurling the mangold was a huge hit\, literally) – bring your games too.  And you don’t have to be a Beiteinu pupil to join in – all members are welcome.  If it is hot there will be ice pops!  If the weather is not up to park life\, we will stay in the NFJ Hall for indoor fun.

DESCRIPTION:Continuing our interesting series of talks on Saturday mornings\, we are delighted to welcome the UK Task Force to KLS.  UK Task Force is a coalition of organisations in the UK Jewish community from a broad spectrum including Liberal Judaism\, United Synagogue\, MRJ\, the various youth movements\, UJIA\, the Board of Deputies. Its aim is to educate on the issues facing Israel’s Arab minority\, looking at gaps in the community’s knowledge. They run seminars\, tours of Israel and bring speakers over to the UK.  Sam heard them speak at the recent LJ Day of Celebration\, and booked them straight away to come and talk to KLS.  To get an idea of their work\, look at their UK Task Force. \nCome and find out more in the Library.

SUMMARY:Film Club – Jurassic World
DESCRIPTION:Once a month\, on a Tuesday afternoon\, we plan to see a film at the Odeon Cinema at the Rotunda centre in central Kingston and members can join us if you wish.  Kingston is very well served by public transport and is therefore relatively easy to reach.  The Rotunda prices have been raised\, the charge is £7.25 for Seniors and £9.15 for others. \n\n\n\n\nWe meet in the foyer by the box office about 15 minutes before the commencement of the film. You need to purchase your own ticket and can sit where you wish. After the film\, members who would like a cup of tea or coffee or light refreshment could move on to one of the Rotunda’s cafés or bars and we discuss the film together. \nThis month we are going to see “Jurassic World”\, meeting in the foyer at 2.45pm\, and the film starts at 3pm. \nThe film club is open to all members regardless of age. Initially\, we will be selecting the film and advising members ideally by email or KLS publications of title and times to meet. \nIf you require any further details or you have some questions please contact the Synagogue office.

DESCRIPTION:After our chavurah supper\, we have a talk and discussion with a guest from Israel\, Reut Michaeli.  Reut is in the UK as the guest of the New Israel Fund\, and will be speaking at the LJ Day of Celebration on Sunday 7 June.  Reut is the Director of the Hotline for Refugees and Migrants. ‘Hotline’ aims to defend and further the rights of refugees and migrants in Israel and works to prevent human trafficking. Its activities include running an advice centre (mainly staffed by volunteers)\, legal activism and public education activities.  The Hotline for Refugees and Migrants is a non-governmental and non-profit organization that aims to defend and further the rights of refugees\, migrants and prevent human trafficking in Israel\, and is a grantee of the New Israel Fund.  Prior to working at Hotline\, Reut was an Associate Director at IRAC – the Israel Religious Action Centre of the Israeli Movement for Progressive Judaism. \nWe will have our usual informal chavurah supper with the service and meal starting at 6.30pm\, and afterwards\, at 8pm\, Reut will talk about the situation facing the approximately 55\,000 refugees and asylum seekers in Israel\, mainly from Eritrea and Sudan. She will discuss current plans to imprison or deport the refugees from practical\, legal and Jewish values standpoints. \nGuests are welcome to services @ KLS\, but please contact the office beforehand.

DESCRIPTION:Monthly 1st Friday of  the month\nYou are warmly invited to this year’s Chavurah Suppers\, a great way to relax\, let go of the week and welcome in Shabbat with other KLS members. Using the LJ Youth Siddur\, we will be singing together\, sharing our stories from the week that has gone\, de-stressing\, and most importantly sharing food\, in an informal Friday night service and shared supper\, with student rabbi Naomi Goldman.  Please bring a plated vegetarian or fish supper and\, if possible\,  a favourite dish to share.  All ages welcome. \nThis month we are having a summer shabbat so bring summer food.  We are also privileged to be sharing the evening with a guest from Israel\, Reut Michaeli.  Reut is in the UK as the guest of the New Israel Fund\, and will be speaking at the LJ Day of Celebration on Sunday 7 June.  Reut is the Director of the Hotline for Refugees and Migrants. ‘Hotline’ aims to defend and further the rights of refugees and migrants in Israel and works to prevent human trafficking. Its activities include running an advice centre (mainly staffed by volunteers)\, legal activism and public education activities.  The Hotline for Refugees and Migrants is a non-governmental and non-profit organization that aims to defend and further the rights of refugees\, migrants and prevent human trafficking in Israel\, and is a grantee of the New Israel Fund.  Prior to working at Hotline\, Reut was an Associate Director at IRAC – the Israel Religious Action Centre of the Israeli Movement for Progressive Judaism. \nWe will have our usual informal chavurah supper with the service and meal\, and afterwards\, at 8pm\, Reut will talk about the situation facing the approximately 55\,000 refugees and asylum seekers in Israel\, mainly from Eritrea and Sudan. She will discuss current plans to imprison or deport the refugees from practical\, legal and Jewish values standpoints. \nGuests are welcome to services @ KLS\, but please contact the office beforehand.

SUMMARY:Shabbat Island Discs with.....the Viney Family
DESCRIPTION:Change of date this month!  Music Service led by Sandra Webber and the KLS Choir\, and featuring KLS members or guests who will reveal their choice of music as part of our regular Shabbat Island Discs feature\, which (usually) takes place on the fourth Friday night of each month.  As usual in these services the “guests” will be interviewed\, and this is a great opportunity to find out more about your fellow congregants. \nThis month we are delighted that Leslie\, Rebecca and Amelia will be leading the service\, supported by Sandra\, Rebekka and the Choir\, and sharing their Shabbat Island Discs.  The Viney family have been members of KLS for many years.  Leslie is a Kabbalat Torah teacher at KLS and teaches journalism\, and also cooks the vegetarian delight for the communal seder each year!  Amelia did her BatMitzvah at KLS and is now a trustee of Liberal Judaism and a Founding Director of The Advocacy Academy which equips young people to change the world.  Rebecca did her BatMitzvah at KLS\, was active in Jewish student affairs in York and California\, now works in the Cabinet Office. \nBring something to share for kiddush afterwards! \nBoth members and guests can take a turn at choosing the music. DESCRIPTION:KLS is celebrating Yom HaAtzma’ut (Israeli Independence Day) with a film festival showcasing 6 Israeli films from different genre.  All films are either in English or have English sub-titles. \nFilms will be shown at 8pm on alternate Mondays\, starting on 11 May.  Popcorn and soft drinks will be available for sale.  This week’s film is “He’arat Shulayimm (Footnote)”.  It has a 12 certificate PG (for thematic elements\, brief nudity\, language and smoking)\, and is a drama whose plot revolves around the troubled relationship between a father and son who teach at the Talmud department of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.  Starring Shlomo Bar’aba and Lior Ashkenazi. \nDuration: 105 mins

SUMMARY:Shavuot
DESCRIPTION:Shavuot (Lag b’Omer): Literally translated as the “Feast of Weeks\,” is celebrated seven weeks after Pesach (Passover). Since the counting of this period (Sefirat ha-omer) begins on the second evening of Pesach\, Shavuot takes place exactly 50 days after the first seder. Hence\, following the Greek word for “fifty\,” Shavuot is also referred to sometimes as Pentecost. . Although its origins are to be found in an ancient grain harvest festival\, Shavuot has been identified since biblical times with the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. There are a number of customs associated with personal practice. Chief among them is the eating of dairy products on Shavuot. Although the reasons for this custom are not completely clear\, it has become traditional to eat milk and cheese products as part of the celebration of Shavuot. \nThe period of the Omer is traditionally associated with semi-mourning and weddings and other celebrations are forbidden. But Lag B’Omer is a happy day interrupting the sadness for 24 hours. There are several Talmudic stories given for this.

SUMMARY:Shavuot Seder @ SLLS
DESCRIPTION:Come join your SLLS friends in an old Shavuot tradition. In the context of a seder\, using our Haggadah Shel Shavuot\, we will use Tanach and Rabbinic Literature to deepen our understanding of the history and teachings of Shavuot. We will share some ritual foods such as a cheese mountain and some Torah shaped biscuits. On Shavuot we read from Ezekiel\, “Mortal\, eat what is offered you; eat this scroll\, and go speak to the house of Israel.”  So I opened my mouth\, and he gave me this scroll to eat\, as he said to me\, “Mortal\, fill your stomach and your belly with this scroll that I give you.”  I ate it\, and it tasted as sweet as honey to me. (Ezekiel 3:1-3).  The seder will be led by Rabbi Janet Darley. \nThe seder will include a supper\, so bring something to share—and of course we’ll have cheesecake. Please Please contact the SLLS office if you plan to come\, so that they know how big the cheese mountain needs to be!
