SUMMARY:Film Club - "Far From The Madding Crowd"
DESCRIPTION:Once a month\, on a Tuesday afternoon\, we plan to see a film at the Odeon Cinema at the Rotunda centre in central Kingston and members can join us if you wish.  Kingston is very well served by public transport and is therefore relatively easy to reach.  The Rotunda prices have been raised\, the charge is £7.25 for Seniors and £9.15 for others. \n\n\nWe meet in the foyer by the box office about 15 minutes before the commencement of the film. You need to purchase your own ticket and can sit where you wish. After the film\, members who would like a cup of tea or coffee or light refreshment could move on to one of the Rotunda’s cafés or bars and we discuss the film together. \nThe film club is open to all members regardless of age. Initially\, we will be selecting the film and advising members ideally by email or KLS publications of title and times to meet. \nIf you require any further details or you have some questions please contact the Synagogue office. \nThis month we are seeing a remake of the Thomas Hardy classic\, “Far From The Madding Crowd”\, starring Carey Mulligan.  The film starts at 3.15pm\, so please meet in the foyer at 3pm having purchased your tickets.

DESCRIPTION:יום העצמאות\nYom HaZikaron/Yom HaAtzma’ut: \nThe fourth of Iyar\, the day preceding Israel’s Independence Day\, was declared by the Israeli Knesset (Parliament) to be a Memorial Day for those who lost their lives in the struggle that led to the establishment of the State of Israel and for all military personnel who were killed while in active duty in Israel’s armed forces.  Joining these two days together conveys a simple message: Israelis owe the independence and the very existence of the Jewish state to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for it. \nIsrael’s Independence Day is celebrated on the fifth day of the month of Iyar\, which is the Hebrew date of the formal establishment of the State of Israel\, when members of the “provisional government” read and signed a Declaration of Independence in Tel Aviv.

DESCRIPTION:The new KLS Film Club got off to a successful launch in March when a number of us enjoyed seeing “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”.  Additionally\, a welcome tea was had by all who attended to discuss the film.  The next gathering will be on Tuesday\, 21st April – film and time will be advised nearer the date. For further details please contact the KLS office. \nOnce a month\, on a Tuesday afternoon\, we plan to see a film at the Rotunda cinema in central Kingston and members can join us if you wish.  Tuesday has been selected because ticket prices are reduced to £5.50 each regardless of age. DESCRIPTION:All welcome to join us for a friendly game of table tennis.  We meet monthly\, usually on the second Tuesday of the month at the synagogue in the NFJ Hall.  All ages and all abilities.  The club recently received a new table in celebration of Robert Markless’s tutorship of 100 Bnei Mitzvah. \n\n\nWe have two tables and play singles as well as doubles. We usually end the evening with all around the table\, when people have to keep moving around and hitting alternatively\, losing a “life” every time they lose a point. After three lives\, a person falls out. This continues until two left and they then play a best of five points singles. It can be very hectic at times\, but good fun. \nWe took part in a national tournament in 2012 and won a trophy! \nPlease contact the Synagogue Office if you would like to join us.

DESCRIPTION:From December 1938 until the outbreak of World War II in September 1939\, some 10\,000 children traveled alone from Germany\, Austria\, Poland and Czechoslovakia to Great Britain on the Kindertransport.  Michele M Gold has written a book\, “Memories That Won’t Go Away: A Tribute to the Children of the Kindertransport”\, telling the stories of hundreds of these kinder.  Their experiences as strangers in a strange land were often complicated and painful\, but as this book illustrates\, the rescued children and their many thousands of descendants remain eternally grateful to the nation that saved them. \nMichele is giving a presentation followed a a Q&A session. \nTickets £5 to be booked in advance.

SUMMARY:Chavurah Supper
DESCRIPTION:Monthly 1st Friday of  the month (apart from December and April!!)\nYou are warmly invited to this year’s Chavurah Suppers\, a great way to relax\, let go of the week and welcome in Shabbat with other KLS members. Using the LJ Youth Siddur\, we will be singing together\, sharing our stories from the week that has gone\, de-stressing\, and most importantly sharing food\, in an informal Friday night service and shared supper\, with student rabbi Naomi Goldman.  Please bring a plated vegetarian or fish supper and\, if possible\,  a favourite dish to share.  All ages welcome. \nGuests are welcome to services @ KLS\, but please contact the office beforehand. \nApr 10 – this Shabbat is also the last day of Pesach\, the day the Israelites crossed the Red Sea. We will talk about what freedom means to us. Bring nice Pesach food (guidelines nearer the time) \nMay 1 – Counting the Omer – get together to mark spring shading into summer and find out why we are counting at this time of year.  Spring food! \nJun 5 – Summer shabbat and summer food \nJul 3 – Reflect on the year that’s gone and say goodbye before the Chavura suppers take a break for the summer.  Bring your favourite dish of this year so far.

DESCRIPTION:Communal Seder held at the synagogue. \nDoors open at 6.00 pm: Seder begins promptly at 6.30 pm. \nJoin us for a community meal – there will be a fish or vegetarian main meal and lovely desserts afterwards.  It is not recommended for children under 5 due to the late finish. \nAs seating is limited\, you are advised to apply QUICKLY while there is availability.   Please contact the Office on office@klsonline.org  for a booking form.  Payment is due at time of booking. \nThe new Liberal Judaism Haggadah will be used exclusively– if you have a copy please bring it with you. DESCRIPTION:פֶּסַח\nPesach\nOriginally a combination of a couple of different spring festivals\, it is a commemoration of the Exodus from Egypt–especially the night when God “passed over” the houses of the Israelites during the tenth plague–and of the following day\, when the Israelites had to leave Egypt hurriedly. Centered on the family or communal celebration of the seder (ritual meal)\, Passover is one of the most beloved of all Jewish holidays. \nThe first night of Pesach is Friday 3 April\, and the festival finishes on Friday 10 April.

DESCRIPTION:Usually once or twice monthly on Tuesdays @ 8pm \nThe KLS Choir rehearses once or twice a month (and enjoy tea\, cake and chat!)\, and sings at the monthly choral service on the 4th Friday of the month and at other services.  You don’t have to read music\, you don’t have to read Hebrew.  Come and try it!  Singing is a great way to meet people\, blow away life’s cobwebs\, contribute to KLS\, learn about our prayers and about Jewish music.  Interested?  Contact Sandra Webber via the KLS office.
