DESCRIPTION:יום העצמאות\nYom HaZikaron/Yom HaAtzma’ut: \nThe fourth of Iyar\, the day preceding Israel’s Independence Day\, was declared by the Israeli Knesset (Parliament) to be a Memorial Day for those who lost their lives in the struggle that led to the establishment of the State of Israel and for all military personnel who were killed while in active duty in Israel’s armed forces.  Joining these two days together conveys a simple message: Israelis owe the independence and the very existence of the Jewish state to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for it. \nIsrael’s Independence Day is celebrated on the fifth day of the month of Iyar\, which is the Hebrew date of the formal establishment of the State of Israel\, when members of the “provisional government” read and signed a Declaration of Independence in Tel Aviv.

DESCRIPTION:The new KLS Film Club got off to a successful launch in March when a number of us enjoyed seeing “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”.  Additionally\, a welcome tea was had by all who attended to discuss the film.  The next gathering will be on Tuesday\, 21st April – film and time will be advised nearer the date. For further details please contact the KLS office. \nOnce a month\, on a Tuesday afternoon\, we plan to see a film at the Rotunda cinema in central Kingston and members can join us if you wish.  Tuesday has been selected because ticket prices are reduced to £5.50 each regardless of age. Kingston is very well served by public transport and is therefore relatively easy to reach. \nThis month we are going to see “Woman in Gold” starring Helen Mirren.  It is the true story of a woman trying to recover a beloved painting\, by Gustav Klimt\, which was stolen by the Nazis during the Second World War.  The film starts at 3.10pm.  We will meet in the foyer by the box office about 15 minutes before the commencement of the film. You need to purchase your own ticket and can sit where you wish. After the film\, members who would like a cup of tea or coffee or light refreshment could move on to one of the Rotunda’s cafés or bars and we could then discuss the film together. \nThe film club is open to all members regardless of age. Initially\, we will be selecting the film and advising members ideally by email or KLS publications of title and times to meet. \nIf you require any further details or you have some questions please contact the Synagogue office.

DESCRIPTION:All welcome to join us for a friendly game of table tennis.  We meet monthly\, usually on the second Tuesday of the month at the synagogue in the NFJ Hall.  All ages and all abilities.  The club recently received a new table in celebration of Robert Markless’s tutorship of 100 Bnei Mitzvah. \n\n\nWe have two tables and play singles as well as doubles. We usually end the evening with all around the table\, when people have to keep moving around and hitting alternatively\, losing a “life” every time they lose a point. After three lives\, a person falls out. This continues until two left and they then play a best of five points singles. It can be very hectic at times\, but good fun. \nWe took part in a national tournament in 2012 and won a trophy! \nPlease contact the Synagogue Office if you would like to join us.

SUMMARY:Kindertransport - talk by Michele M Gold
DESCRIPTION:From December 1938 until the outbreak of World War II in September 1939\, some 10\,000 children traveled alone from Germany\, Austria\, Poland and Czechoslovakia to Great Britain on the Kindertransport.  Michele M Gold has written a book\, “Memories That Won’t Go Away: A Tribute to the Children of the Kindertransport”\, telling the stories of hundreds of these kinder.  Their experiences as strangers in a strange land were often complicated and painful\, but as this book illustrates\, the rescued children and their many thousands of descendants remain eternally grateful to the nation that saved them. \nMichele is giving a presentation followed a a Q&A session. \nTickets £5 to be booked in advance.

DESCRIPTION:Monthly 1st Friday of  the month (apart from December and April!!)\nYou are warmly invited to this year’s Chavurah Suppers\, a great way to relax\, let go of the week and welcome in Shabbat with other KLS members. Using the LJ Youth Siddur\, we will be singing together\, sharing our stories from the week that has gone\, de-stressing\, and most importantly sharing food\, in an informal Friday night service and shared supper\, with student rabbi Naomi Goldman.  Please bring a plated vegetarian or fish supper and\, if possible\,  a favourite dish to share.  All ages welcome. \nGuests are welcome to services @ KLS\, but please contact the office beforehand. \nApr 10 – this Shabbat is also the last day of Pesach\, the day the Israelites crossed the Red Sea. We will talk about what freedom means to us. DESCRIPTION:The 40 Club was set up almost forty years ago to provide occasions for members of both Kingston synagogues (United at Uxbridge Road and KLS) to meet socially. We meet at the home of Susan Zissman on one Sunday afternoon a month starting at 3pm unless it is a lunch at 12.30pm. \nWe have talks\, music afternoons\, fun or just nosh and natter and Susan supplies a superb tea. \nIf you are interested please contact the KLS office to get Susan’s phone number to learn more and get her full address. Synagogue members and their friends will always be welcome. When it is a lunch\, it would be appreciated if you would provide a contribution to the meal. \nForthcoming dates are Sundays\, 22 March\, 19 April\, 24 May\, 28 June (summer lunch at 12.30)\, 19 July\, 23 August\, 20 September and 18 October. \nWe look forward to seeing more KLS members on these very enjoyable afternoons. \n
