DESCRIPTION:All welcome to join us for a friendly game of table tennis.  We meet monthly\, usually on the second Tuesday of the month at the synagogue in the NFJ Hall.  All ages and all abilities.  The club recently received a new table in celebration of Robert Markless’s tutorship of 100 Bnei Mitzvah. \n\n\nWe have two tables and play singles as well as doubles. We usually end the evening with all around the table\, when people have to keep moving around and hitting alternatively\, losing a “life” every time they lose a point. After three lives\, a person falls out. This continues until two left and they then play a best of five points singles. It can be very hectic at times\, but good fun. \nWe took part in a national tournament in 2012 and won a trophy! \nPlease contact the Synagogue Office if you would like to join us.

DESCRIPTION:What is Holocaust Memorial Day?\nEach year\, communities across Britain come together to remember the millions of people killed in the Holocaust\, Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia\, Rwanda\, Bosnia\, Darfur and other parts of the world. The Nazi persecution alone led to the death of some six million Jews. \nThe initiative is supported by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust who have set the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day in 2015:Keeping the Memory Alive. \nThe Royal Borough of Kingston’s Holocaust Memorial Day will be held on Sunday 1 February 2015 at 2.30pm in Kingston Guildhall. It is being organised by the Kingston Inter Faith Forum in conjunction with Kingston University. \nThe event will be opened by Rev Andrew Williams (Kingston University Chaplain)\, and Rabbi Charley Baginsky (Kingston Liberal Synagogue) will introduce the afternoon on the theme: Keeping the Memory Alive.  There will also be words from Josh Whatsize (Kingston University Student and National Lead for Youth Ambassadors\, Holocaust Memorial Day Trust) looking at keeping the memory alive in future generations.  Rabbi Samuel Landau (Kingston\, Surbiton and District Synagogue) will introduce the act of commemoration\, and light the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust candle which is then passed around. \nA choir of children from both Kingston Synagogues will sing\, and children from the synagogues will read an adapted Kel Maleh Rachamim prayer of mourning.  Leaders from different faiths will read\, \nThe event is open to all. No booking is required. It will be followed by refreshments. \nTo help keep the memory of the Holocaust alive\, young people living or studying in the Kingston area were invited to submit a piece of art to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. \nSelected art works will be displayed from 2pm at the Holocaust Memorial Day event\, and the Mayor of Kingston will award prizes to the winners during the event.  The exhibition will then be mounted in public places\, education centres and faith-based organisations across the Borough. \n  \n\n– See more at: http://hmd.org.uk/events/kingston-upon-thames-hmd-event#sthash.C8Jc1W6q.dpuf

DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome Alex Wakely who works for the charity ‘Gesher.’ Gesher help adults who have been brought up in the Ultra Orthodox community but wish to leave adjust to the outside world. Many people in the community grow up speaking only Yiddish and some have never even used public trasport or bought food at a non Jewish shop. DESCRIPTION:The relationship between Judaism and politics is a long and complex one. If Judaism is a religion first and foremost should it have any impact on our political lives? Yet\, as Liberal Jews many of us feel compelled by the call of Prophetic Judaism which tells us the two are inseparable. This course will explore some of the textual models for a Political Judaism and then move into seeking what it means to see Liberal Judaism as a political Judaism. The following weeks will then look at those Jews who were involved in radical politics and attempt to understand whether there is something about Judaism that attracts this sort of political thinking. DESCRIPTION:Music Service led by Rabbi Charley Baginsky\, with the KLS Choir.  This month you are invited to bring your favourite Chanukah songs on your phone/iPod/MP3 player\, to share as part of our regular Shabbat Island Discs feature\, which takes place on the fourth Friday night of each month. \nBoth members and guests can take a turn at choosing the music. If you’d like a chance\, contact Sandra Webber. \nThis week we are delighted to welcome Rabbi Ofek Meir from the Leo Baeck Education Center in Haifa\, one of the charities that we are supporting through our High Holy Days Appeal this year.  Rabbi Meir is taking the opportunity to come to KLS to thank the members for their valuable support.  Please come along and meet Rabbi Meir. \nRabbi Ofek Meir\nRabbi Ofek Meir joined the Leo Baeck Education Center in 1989\, and worked as a community youth leader at the Leo Baeck Community Center and as Assistant Rabbi at Leo Baeck’s Ohel Avraham Progressive Synagogue. In 1991 he served as the first Shaliach to Liberal Judaism in the United Kingdom where he also attended the Royal College of Music. Rabbi Meir was the founder and the first Director of the Lokey International Academy of Jewish Studies until 2006. He holds a B.A. in Jewish History and Thought from Oranim Teachers’ Seminary of the University of Haifa\, an MA in Jewish Education from HUC-JIR New York and a degree in classical guitar from the Royal College of Music in London. \nPlease bring something to share for kiddush. \nGuests are welcome to join us for services at KLS\, but please contact the office beforehand.
