SUMMARY:Lights Out! Commemorate the Centenary of the Start of the First World War
DESCRIPTION:LIGHTS OUT\nThe lamps are going out all over Europe\, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime. \nSir Edward Grey\, Foreign Secretary\, uttered these words on the eve of Britain officially entered the First World War. Exactly 100 years later we are inviting millions of individuals\, households and companies to join together in a national moment of reflection. \nWe’re encouraging everyone in the UK to turn off their lights between 10pm and 11pm on 4 August 2014 – leaving only a single light or candle for this symbolic act of reflection and hope. \n \nA limited edition Centenary candle is available from M&S stores or online for £4\, with all profit coming to The Royal British Legion. \nWe hope to light one million candles across the UK to remember each and every one of those Service men and women who gave their lives in the war to end all wars. Please join together with us to create a unique national moment for the United Kingdom and The Royal British Legion.

SUMMARY:Remembrance Ceremony marking 100 years since the start of the First World War
DESCRIPTION:The Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue at Bevis Marks\, Anglo-Jewry’s longest serving synagogue\, together with the Board of Deputies of British Jews\, the UK Jewish community’s national representative organisation\, invite you to a Jewish community Remembrance Ceremony\, marking 100 years since the start of the First World War. \nThe whole community is invited to attend the ceremony – taking place at Bevis Marks on the night of Monday August 4th – which is part of the national ‘Lights Out’ event\, in which communities up and down the UK switch off the electric lights in their congregations in order to reflect on what the First World War means to them. This national event coincides with the most sombre night of the Jewish calendar – Tisha Ba’v – on which we remember and reflect on the exiles and tragedies of the Jewish people. \nBevis Marks and the Board therefore invite you to take part in a unique and atmospheric candlelit Tisha B’av service at 8:50pm\, followed by the ‘Lights Out’ ceremony\, which will take place between 10pm and 11pm at Bevis Marks Synagogue. \nThis ceremony will include a keynote address from Rabbi Joseph Dweck\, Senior Rabbi\, Spanish and Portuguese Jews’ Congregation\, as well as extracts from diaries and war poems. There will also be a display of First World War exhibits arranged by the Jewish Military Museum. \nPlease email events@bod.org.uk to register for this event.

SUMMARY:Shabbat Service
DESCRIPTION:A chavurah supper is an opportunity to share an informal meal\, chatting and getting to know each other\, and welcome in the Shabbat.  Please bring a plated vegetarian/fish supper\, and maybe your favourite dish to share\, and you can tell us why it’s so special to you.  We use the LJ Youth Siddur\, siddur lil’mod v’la’asot. \nAs a Liberal congregation\, men and women sit together and all members enjoy equal participation in services. \nUniquely we use gender-neutral language\, reflecting our egalitarian approach to prayer. We also use many transliterated prayer sheets which are especially useful for those whose Hebrew is not fluent. \nMusic plays an important role in our services. Singing is regularly enhanced by our volunteer choir\, led by our director of music\, though the whole congregation is encouraged to join in. Service styles vary – our family services\, for example\, can be very lively\, whereas our Friday nights are often quieter and more reflective. Our members participate in all parts of the service\, including Torah blessings\, haftorah readings and more. We also welcome lay readers from the congregation to lead services from time to time\, although most services are taken by our rabbi.

DESCRIPTION:Cricket will be one of the more normal games we play unlike mangold hurling!\nSaturday 28 June from 1-2.30pm (straight after we have cleared up the Kiddush) \nTo mark the end of another exciting year we will be having another party in the park over the road.  Bring a rug or chairs\, a picnic and something yummy to share!  We will be playing games (hurling the mangold was a huge hit\, literally\, last year) – bring your games too.  And you don’t have to be a Beiteinu pupil to join in – all members are welcome.  If it is hot there will be ice pops! \nIf it is raining\, we will hold the party in the NFJ Hall\, and we might have to hold off on the mangold hurling and French cricket\, but all sorts of other fun can be had. \nIf you would like to help with the minimal organising\, please contact the Synagogue Office.

SUMMARY:Erev Shavout Service
DESCRIPTION:8pm Erev Shavout Service led by Rabbi Charley Baginsky  and Student Rabbi Adam Frankenberg\, with the KLS Choir. \nShavuot is traditionally regarded as the time of the giving of the Torah. Come to KLS for a service combined with an interactive study session using Bibliodrama\, where we will attempt to really get under the skin of Ruth and Naomi\, Boaz and Elimelech\, as well as other characters in the story. \nBibliodrama is a fun and dynamic way of interacting with the Biblical Text in a new and personal way\, through responses in character. It is a great way to encourage midrashic thinking. \nThis session will be facilitated by Student Rabbi Adam Frankenberg\, there will be participation\, but it will be light-hearted and fun. (Props will be provided!) \nPlease bring something to share for the kiddush.

SUMMARY:Shabbat service
DESCRIPTION:Each Saturday morning at 11.15am\, this week led by Vince Daly\, Lay Leader\nAs a Liberal congregation\, men and women sit together and all members enjoy equal participation in services. \nWe read from the standard Liberal Judaism service prayer book\, the Siddur Lev Chadash or ‘New Heart’ prayer book. It combines the core traditional prayers with contemporary readings\, poems and meditations from a variety of Jewish sources. Uniquely it also uses gender-neutral language\, reflecting our egalitarian approach to prayer.

SUMMARY:Shabbat Island Discs with Sam Cohen
DESCRIPTION:Choral Service led by Rabbi Charley Baginsky\, with the KLS Choir\, and featuring Sam Cohen – former LJY Netzer movement worker – who will reveal his choice of music as part of our regular Shabbat Island Discs feature\, which takes place on the fourth Friday night of each month. \nOur “Shabbat Island Discs” services are proving popular\, with record attendances at the first four in the series (sorry about the pun). \nThe idea is based on the BBC radio programme Desert Island Discs\, where a guest chooses their favourite pieces of music and explains what they have meant in their life. \nWe have a mixture of outside guests and “celebrities” from within KLS.  Our castaway in June is Rabbi Pete Tobias. \nIf you would like to volunteer as a castaway and select the music either recorded or for the choir to sing\, contact the Synagogue Office.  There are spaces from July onwards. You can even accompany the choir if you play an instrument. \nThe choir do their best to learn a new tune or two for the occasion. They excelled in January when Sandra tracked down the singer and then the composer of one of Craig’s choices (identified on a YouTube clip)\, got him to email the sheet music for the choir to learn\, accompanied by Liz on the piano\, all in the space of a week. \nMusic chosen so far \nPaul Levene\nFormer KLS Chair and music  connoisseur \nBendigamos\, a Sephardi after meal blessing sung in Spanish by Lisa Hirsch\nCantor Emile Ziahan of the Sephardi Synagogue in Ashkelon\, Israel\, singing a liturgical piece in the Morrocan style\nAbbodah (worship) by Ernest Bloch\, written for a very young Yehudi Menuhin\nYism’chu sung by Yitzchak Meir Helfgot with Itzhak Perlman on violin (from the album Eternal Echoes: Songs and Dances for the Soul) \nCantor Gershon Silins\nCantor for the Liberal Judaism Rabbinic Team \nShalom Aleichem (arrangement by Michael Isaacson)\nAhavat Olam (arr.
