Rabbi Lev grew up in Reading Liberal Jewish Community – a small, progressive synagogue whose religious life buzzed around a kibbutz-style farm. In childhood, he remembers planting trees on Tu Bishvat, harvesting rhubarb at Shavuot, and sleeping under the stars at Sukkot.
Before training for the rabbinate, Lev worked as a campaigner in the charity sector, focusing especially on issues of workers’ rights. In 2022, he received ordination from Leo Baeck College at the Liberal Jewish Synagogue. He has joined us from Oaks Lane Reform Synagogue, where he worked for two years following a student placement.
Lev was one of the founders of the Queer Yeshiva, which teaches Talmud to Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Trans people. He is an active supporter of UK Friends of Rabbis for Human Rights, having spent last summer doing protective presence work with Palestinians against settler violence in the West Bank. While there, he studied Jewish ethics of war at the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem.
Lev loves walking in the countryside, going to the gym, and reading social history. His husband, Laurence, grew up at Kingston Liberal Synagogue, and were married in 2025 by KLS’s Emeritus Rabbi, Danny Rich.
