Exploring Judaism & Conversion

Exploring Judaism is our 18th month, online programme, of adult education. It is open to members wishing to learn about their traditions and share their own wisdom and to those seeking conversion or affirmation in the Jewish faith.

We welcome people who want, with good heart and good faith, to become Jewish.

Who our program is for

Maybe you’ve just realised Judaism is the religion for you.
You could have Jewish heritage and want to confirm your status within the community.
Or perhaps you’re just looking for spirituality in a complicated world.

You will find yourself welcome at Kingston Liberal Synagogue.

Practicalities

Our teaching calendar is made up of modules taught between the Jewish festivals. Weekly attendance is expected to build up knowledge and experience of our ideas and way of life.

It takes 18months to cover all the modules. You are welcome to join at any point throughout the year.

The online sessions are on a Thursday, 7pm-8pm weekly. You will be given a reading list to complement your studies and, if you are seeking conversion, you will be expected to attend weekly evening online Hebrew classes with Dominique. The date and time for Hebrew classes vary according to your Hebrew level.

Requirements

To become Jewish or affirm as Jewish, you will need to:

  • Attend 18 months of study on our Exploring Judaism course

  • Become regularly involved in the life of the synagogue, including all Shabbats and festivals

  • Learn Hebrew with us to a level that you can confidently read prayers

  • Write two essays about your relationship with Judaism

  • Go the beit din - a body of three Jewish religious leaders - to be confirmed as Jewish

  • Participate in welcoming rituals, which might be mikveh (ritual immersion), call up to Torah (aliyah) , and/or an admission ceremony.

Our conversions are recognised by all Progressive Jewish institutions worldwide.
